Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about finding tools, submitting a product, community activity, AI discovery and featured placements.
What is The Tool Directory?+
The Tool Directory is an independent discovery platform for online tools, software and browser utilities. You can browse by category, use case, audience and platform, then compare products using concise summaries and community feedback.
Is it free to submit a tool?+
Yes. Standard submissions are free and reviewed before publication. Paid featuring is optional and appears separately from community-driven discovery.
How do the Top Tools rankings work?+
Top Tools reflects genuine activity around each product, including upvotes, useful discussion and freshness. Verified builders who participate constructively across the directory can receive a small additional visibility benefit. Sponsored placements do not buy votes or a Top Tools position.
What are community points?+
Signed-in members earn community points for useful participation, such as supporting another product or leaving helpful feedback. If you are a verified builder, active participation can also help your own tool gain a little more visibility.
Can I upvote my own tool?+
No. Self-upvotes are blocked. The community is designed to encourage genuine support and useful feedback between members.
How does The Tool Directory help AI assistants understand tools?+
We organise profiles with consistent details such as categories, use cases, audiences, platforms and pricing context. That gives search engines and AI assistants clearer public information to interpret.
Does listing a tool guarantee it will appear in AI answers?+
No. AI assistants and search engines decide independently which public sources they crawl, cite or recommend. A clear, well-structured profile can make a product easier to understand, but no directory can guarantee inclusion in an AI answer.
What is the difference between a featured tool and a Top Tool?+
Featured tools are paid promotional placements and are clearly labelled Sponsored. Top Tools are surfaced through community activity and freshness. Buying a feature does not increase a tool’s upvote count.
What do the paid feature plans include?+
The 7-day plan costs US$15 and the 30-day plan costs US$40. Eligible tools can receive homepage and category visibility for the purchased period, plus a permanent dofollow website link on the approved listing.
Does the dofollow link expire after a paid feature ends?+
No. The dofollow website link remains on the approved listing after the temporary homepage and category promotion ends.
Can I claim an existing tool listing?+
Yes. Create an account and contact us from an email address associated with the product or another verifiable company channel. Once ownership is verified, we can connect the listing to your profile.
Can I update my tool after it is published?+
Yes. Tool owners can send corrections or updates. We may edit listing copy so descriptions remain clear and consistent across the directory.
Why was my submission not accepted?+
We may decline duplicates, inactive products, unsafe or deceptive services, placeholder sites, spam-focused products or submissions that do not provide enough information for visitors to understand the tool.
Are the descriptions written by the tool companies?+
Not by default. The Tool Directory aims to provide concise, independent context rather than simply repeat vendor marketing copy. Tool owners can still submit factual updates and corrections.
Can I comment on tools?+
Yes. Signed-in members can join product discussions. Constructive, product-relevant feedback is encouraged; spam, harassment and attempts to manipulate community activity can be removed.
How can I report an outdated or incorrect listing?+
Use the Contact page and include the tool name, directory URL and the information that needs correcting. Product pricing, features and availability can change quickly, so the provider’s own website remains the best place to confirm current commercial details.
